Fact: Last semester, TPP was unable to print an anticipated third issue due to a lack of funds. Since the spring of 2005 TPP has been funded by donations and its own staff, namely by Editor Emeritus Zachary Taylor.

Myth: The Pilgrims Protest is a student organization and is going to be completely censored by CIU.

Fact: Due to a lack of funding last semester, TPP sought to become an official student organization so that we could have money, access to an office, a computer, and the ability to purchase other necessities (digital recorders, MS Publisher software, etc). It was a decision of practicality. It was during this time that TPP (when it was still an independent publication) receieved word from the administration that we would have to be reveiwed by the provost before we could publish another issue. We have yet to submit an issue to the provost for review, and so we are completely clueless as to how far they may attempt to censor the paper. I (Gina Russo, editor-in-chief of TPP) met with Rick Swift, Dr. Gentry, Dr. Crutchfiled, Rachelle Gorman and Dr. Delozier to discuss establishing a code of journalism ethics at CIU. According to statements at the meeting, there were hopes that with established journalism guidelines TPP would not have to be reviewed by adminstration. It was also noted that this decision was very unfair, as The White Napkin does not have to submit to anyone for review. The entire TPP staff is prepared to cease being a student organization should we encounter irrational censorship. We would rather struggle financially or shut down before we would let the paper become a mouth piece for CIU. We are not against CIU is any way, but we do want the ability to speak truth and seek truth without fear of cesorship, discipline, or expulsion.

NOTE: According to the Student Free Press Law Center (www.splc.org) private institutions do not have the right to enforce rules on student publications that are independent, though they do hold the right to take disciplinary action against the students involved. The right of the school to enforce rules increases if the publication is distributed on campus or during campus events. I am currently researching what rights we would have if we were independent as opposed to school-funded, and if we would legally be obligated to comply to the provost review rule if we were still an independent publication.

Myth: Anyone at CIU or anonymous CIU blogs are good sources of information regarding The Pilgrims Protest.

Fact: Unless you heard it directly from Gina Russo, Courtney Kilgore, Sean Chandler, Elizabeth Castellow, Zachary Taylor, or Dr. John Crutchfield do NOT trust it as fact. Please verify rumors with members of the staff. As some of you can tell, I did not list every member of staff. Some people on staff are not privy to the same information as others. Dr. Crutchfield or myself are the best sources should you have any questions. If you're getting your information from an anonymous blog or from a student who is not affiliated with the paper, it's probably wrong or severely misrepresented.

Myth: TPP is severely biased and not a good paper.

Fact: While some of our authors have a penchant for reporting the sensational, it must be noted that we are submissions based. Therefore, if you don't like an opinion, you can write your own and send it to us. We are only as good as our submissions. As the new editor-in-chief I am making it my priority to make sure that information in articles is absolutely true and to ensure that all staff written articles are fair in their representation of the facts. But we are editorial by nature so its impossible to publish cold, factual articles. If you want the other side represented, WRITE YOUR THOUGHTS and email them to thepilgrimsprotest@gmail.com

Myth: You denied my article so obviously you're against freedom of the press.

Fact: We seek to accept a plethora of articles in a range of opinions. We also seek to print articles that will speak the truth in love and not purely inflammatory pieces. We don't want to become the paper that publishes student venting. We want to publish well-formed, articulated, eloquent ideas that are respectful and thought-provoking. Sometimes we turn down articles because we don't have room, or because someone wrote a much better article on the same topic and we preferred theirs. We also have the right to deny any article if we just feel like it. Every publication has that right.

Questions from the student body:

1. Couldn't you just charge people for the paper so you wouldn't have to become a student organization?
If we did this we would have no guarantee that we would actually receive enough money to cover the cost of printing. Most students pass around the same copy of TPP. Charging for issues also puts new burdens on us such as filing taxes or being vulnerable to lawsuits.

2. Couldn't you be funded by donations?
Theoretically, we could. However, in every issue of TPP we asked that our readers would help by giving donations. Very few ever did, and we certainly never received enough money to cover printing costs for 3 issues a semester. The only way this could work is if our readers would sign commitments saying that they would contribute X amount of dollars each semester for the printing of TPP, and then give us that money at the beginning of each semester. Ideally we need around $250 an issue (for high quality professional printing), so if our readers could commit to $750 a semester, we'd at least have enough money to print. This doesn't seem likely, but you're more than welcome to try and prove me wrong. : )

While this Xanga is called ThePilgrimsProtest it is in no way affiliated with any member of the Editorial Staff except for me, Gina Russo. The opinions and thoughts expressed on this blog are solely those of Gina Russo, and not those of CIU, Dr. Crutchfield, or TPP staff. I wish to use this as a forum to dispell rumors and keep students informed about the paper.
